How Radio 47 Transformed Its Studio with multiCAM Systems

Radio 47, based in Nairobi, Kenya, has rolled out a next-generation visual radio system designed and installed by multiCAM Systems. This fully automated solution transforms a traditional radio studio into a dynamic video production environment, setting a new benchmark for broadcast innovation in East Africa.

Hands-Free Production with Advanced Technology

The system uses professional PTZ cameras, the Ember+ protocol, and advanced automation features. Thanks to multiCAM Systems’ technology, camera switching is triggered automatically by microphone activity: presenters simply speak, and the system selects the best angle in real time no camera operator needed.

“This isn’t just radio with cameras. It’s a complete production workflow covering radio, livestream, podcasts, and social media,” explains Fred Martin Kiwalabye, the project’s lead systems architect.

Everything is controlled from a single interface, including:

  • Real-time branding
  • On-air graphics
  • Multi-platform audio routing

One studio now powers multiple content outputs automatically and efficiently.

Professional Audio Control with Lawo IP Technology

The solution also features Lawo audio consoles, globally recognized in the broadcast industry. Each studio is equipped with a Lawo crystal console connected to a centralized Lawo Power Core DSP engine, creating a fully IP-native broadcast infrastructure.

Based on AES67 and RAVENNA standards for audio-over-IP, this integration ensures perfect synchronization between audio and video.

Operators benefit from customizable touchscreen interfaces that simplify control and monitoring even remotely. Cabling is minimized, with far fewer SDI and XLR cables, while maintaining maximum flexibility and reliability.

Setting a New Standard for Media Production in East Africa

Radio 47 is among the first broadcasters in the region to adopt this level of automation and IP technology, paving the way for smarter media production.

Fred Martin Kiwalabye sums up the approach well:
“This project wasn’t just an upgrade it was a reinvention of how media works: cleaner, smarter, faster, and future-proof. By combining multiCAM’s automated video production with Lawo’s IP audio architecture, we built a system tailored to the Kenyan market’s unique needs.”

Voices from the Radio 47 Team

  • Irene Mbaya, Head of Radio Production:
“This system lets our teams produce faster, smarter, and with more energy.”
  • Wayne Wafula, Head of Digital:
“We now create studio-quality visuals that meet international standards—all from one control point.”
  • Patrick Mwaura, Producer:
“The workflow is smoother, and creative possibilities have grown tremendously.”
  • Gathoni Njau, Producer:
“What used to require multiple tools is now fully automated. We can focus on content, without technical worries.”

A Vision Focused on the Future

This installation proves that local broadcast solutions can compete on a global scale. The modular system and IP workflows offer great flexibility, allowing easy expansion and remote collaboration an undeniable asset for the future of media in East Africa.

Fred Martin concludes:
“We documented every step. This isn’t just for us, it’s a model for Africa and beyond.”
